on ## What is inductor and what works?

Do you know what is the inductor? How does it work, what are its types, what are the advantages of using it? If you also do not know the answers to all these questions. then there is no need to panic because today we will be able to answer all these questions through this article. An inductor is a component that is capable of resisting changes in AC current. With this, it can also store energy in the magnetic field when the current passes through it.

This changing current (AC) produces a changing magnetic field that induces a voltage, and it oppose the current that is generated from the magnetic field. This is called Inductance. Therefore, you can also consider an inductor as an AC resistor. Simply put, then it is the inductor coil of wires which is wrapped around the core. This core provides an support for that wire. So today I thought that why should I give you complete information about what is inductor so that the basics of inductor are completely clear in the coming time. So let’s start without delay, what is an inductor.

## What is inductor?

The inductor is a passive electronic component that stores energy in the form of the magnetic field. Simply put, an inductor consists of a wire loop or coil. The inductance is directly proportional to the number of turns in the coil. Inductance also depends on other things like the radius of the coil and the type of material around which the coil is wound.

It is made up of a wire which has a property inductance, i.e. That it opposes the flow of current. The inductance of the wire increases when the number of turns is increased. The inductance is represented by the alphabet ‘L’ and is measured in Henry. This inductance characterizes the inductor.

The ratio of flux and current only provides inductance. L = Φ / I

## How does the inductor work?

It is an electrical device that stores electrical energy in the form of magnetic field. It is constructed by wounding the wire in the core. These cores are made of either ceramic material, or iron or air. Its core is either toroidal or E-shaped.

The electric current traveling in the coil induces magnetic field around the conductor. The intensity of the magnetic field increases when the core is placed between the coil. This provides a core low reluctance path to magnetic flux.

## What is transformer

Magnetic fields induce EMF in the coil from which current is generated. And according to Lenz’s law, the causes always oppose the effect. Here current is the reason, and it induce due to voltage. Therefore, EMF oppose the change of current which changes the magnetic field. The current which is less because the inductance is called inductive reactance. This inductive reactance increases with the increase of number of turn of coils.

## Types of Inductor

Although there are many types of Inductor but among them which are the main ones, let’s know about them.

### Air cored inductor:

This type of inductor is commonly used in RF applications where the level of inductance is very small. The fact that no core is being used brings many advantages in itself: there is no loss within the core because air is lossless, and this leads to a high-level Q, if we assume Make sure the inductor or coil resistance is low. In contrast, the number of turns is more in the coil so that the inductance of the same level can be achieved and this increases the physical size.

### Iron cored inductor:

It’s has Iron cores are normally used in inductors of high power and high inductance types. Iron laminate is also used in some audio coils or chokes. However, they are not widely used.

## Types of Mechanical Inductor and their functions

Inductors are also categorized according to their mechanical construction. Let us know something about that.

### Bobbin based inductor:

This type of inductor is in a cylindrical bobbin. It is designed for printed circuit board mounting, even for surface mounts because they are very large and are mounted by some mechanical means. The same format is used in some older version inductors.

### Toroidal inductor:

This form inductor is wound over the toroid – in a circular former. Ferrite is used according to a former because it increases the permeability of the core. The main advantage of a toroid is that it enables the toroid to move the magnetic flux around which it travels around the toroid in a circle and from which the flux leakage is very low.

### Multilayer ceramic inductor:

This type of inductor is used more in surface mount technology. The inductor is manufactured from a magnetic ceramic material within and more commonly of ferrite. In this the coil is placed within the ceramic body and external circuit is also present in the end caps such as in a chip capacitors.

### Film inductor:

The inductor of this form uses a film of conductor over a base material. This film is later etched and then shaped so that the conductor can be given his correct profile.

## What is the function of the inductor?

By the way, Inductor has many applications. So, let’s discuss some applications of Inductor.

## Filters

Inductors are mostly used with capacitors and resistors for making filters, for use in analog circuits and signal processing. However an inductor alone functions like a low-pass filter. The impedance of the inductor increases as the frequency of the signal increases.

When the inductor is combined with a capacitor, its impedance decreases as the signal’s frequency increases, so it can be made a notched filter that passes only some frequency range. In this case capacitors, inductors, and resistors can be combined to create many advanced filter topologies which can be used in many applications.

### Sensors

Inductors are used to create contactless sensors. Inductive sensors are used in the intersection of traffic so that the number of traffic can be known and the signal can be adjusted accordingly.

### Transformers

By combining inductors that have a shared magnetic path, then a transformer can be created from it. Since these transformers are a very fundamental component of any national electrical grids. Therefore, the use of inductors in these transformers increases the dependency of inductors.

### Motors

Normally inductors are always in a fixed position and are not allowed to move so that they can align themselves with any nearby magnetic field. The inductive motor leverage raises the magnetic force that is applied on the inductors so that the electrical energy can be converted into mechanical energy.

The biggest advantage of inductive motors is that unlike other designs, it does not require any electrical contact between the rotor and the motor, making the inductive motors more robust and reliable.

### Energy Storage

Like capacitors, inductors can also be used for energy storage. But unlike capacitors, inductors have very severe limitation as to how long energy can be stored because energy is stored in the magnetic field which can collapse anytime if power is removed. Therefore, the main use of these is that they should be used according to energy storage in switch-mode power supplies, such as power supply in a PC.
